Line 2 is important because it connects all the largest railways stations in Milan. In fact, its route through the city links the stations of Lambrate FS, Centrale FS, Garibaldi FS, Cadorna FNM and Porta Genova FS, all with considerable commuter flows.

Line 2 also passes through several municipalities in the hinterland of Milan, such as Cologno Nord, Gessate and now also Assago, via the major junction of Cadorna. The works on the station of Cologno Nord were done without interrupting the underground line.
