The 1.7 km extension of the southern light rail line, which is already connected to the entrance to Rozzano, is under way. It will serve the most densely populated areas of the city directly without any need for buses. The current line, from Piazza Fontana to viale Romagna, will continue on to the new terminal in Rozzano via Guido Rossa.
The preliminary works, which consist in moving the underground utilities and adapting the roads began in 2008 and were completed in 2009. The technological works (permanent way, electric traction, surface restoration works and power supply) are currently in progress.
The works were resumed, after a year of suspension due to replacement of the contractor, and will be completed in 2018. The project submitted to the Municipality by MM Spa is divided into two separate phases:
- the first part of the work was completed in 2009 and consisted in adapting all the utilities situated in the subsoil;
- the second part was started in 2011 with the construction of the new terminal but the contractors’ failure to fulfil brought the works to a halt.
On 30th May 2017, the work site was delivered to the company that will complete the infrastructure.
