The waterworks network in Milan draws water from the second aquifer (at a depth of 80-100 meters) through a double-lift system consisting of about 584 wellsfor hydropotable use and 32 total pumping stations (of which 28 are active) that feed the adduction and distribution network to the territory. Wastewater flows into the sewage network that in Milan is developed for 1.639 km, with gradually increasing collector sizes. The collection system is of a unitary type, with wastewater and rainwater collected in a single conduit. MM is also in charge of managing the network of city watercourse culverts, including road drainage infrastructure. Discover more.
Milan boasts a particularly virtuous and efficient wastewater treatment system: the two wastewater treatment plants of San Rocco and Nosedo, operated by MM, treat about 90% of the wastewater produced in the Milan area and use it for irrigation purposes, with a view to a circular economy. Discover more.
Waste produced by wastewater treatment plants is recovered-in accordance with the provisions of current national regulations-both for energy and material recycling purposes. Discover more.
MM encourages the use of drinking water through the 661 fountains present throughout the city and the 52 Water Houses installed across the Municipalities and in high-traffic areas such as university campuses and city parks. Learn more.

The “Centrale dell’Acqua” is Italy’s first industrial museum dedicated to public water. It is Corporate Museum of MM, an old pumping station dating back to 1906 and now finally restored. In addition to a wealth of objects and documents, it is one of the most important educational and cultural centers in the city.
