Extension of the M1 metro line to Baggio – Executive Tender Project

Elements of interest and innovation

  • The project presents innovative solutions. In particular, with regard to fire prevention, in applying the technical rule attached to the D.M. 21/10/2015, advanced solutions and design methodologies have been developed for the design of smoke and heat disposal systems and escape routes through the use of Fire Safety Engineering (which includes CFD fluid dynamic simulations and escape simulations) both in stations and in underground locations. Furthermore, completely new active and passive protection systems have been adopted for this type of activity, such as the pressurization systems of the stairwells and smoke filters (with open doors), cold smoke sealing doors, a “water mist” extinguishing system (i.e. finely nebulized water) for the protection of technical rooms, commercial premises and escalator rooms.
  • The executive project was developed using the BIM methodology, with an integrated approach of all the design elements of the modeled works and therefore with a total vision on the project: not only on its “material” realization, but also on the impact of the works on the environment, potentially for the entire life cycle of the work.

The extension to the West of the M1 line develops, from the current maneuvering track of the Bisceglie station, completely underground for about 3.3 kilometers and includes 3 stations (Parri-Valsesia, Baggio and Olmi) and 6 line structures. After the Olmi station, which will become the new terminus, the route passes under the ring road and rises to the surface where, at ground level and at the end of this branch of Line 1, a new depot will also be built with mainly train storage function in order to make the operations of putting into service and exiting the convoys on this branch more efficient.

At the end of a design process that began with the feasibility study and the analysis of design alternatives, MM developed the executive tender project between 2021 and 2022. The tender notice was issued in May 2024 once the necessary additional funding was obtained from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to cover the higher cost, compared to the previously assigned funding, due to the increase in materials that occurred especially in the years 2021 / 2022.

MM’s role

In the design phase: Feasibility study (with evaluation of design alternatives), Preparation of the Technical and Economic Feasibility Project, Preparation of the Definitive Project, Preparation of the Executive Project for Tender, verification of the Executive Design, Coordination of Safety in the design phase, Assistance to the RUP, Technical-Administrative support activities and services to the municipal administration.

In the tender phase: Contracting Station

In the execution phase: Works Management, Coordination of Safety in the Execution phase, Assistance to the RUP, Technical-Administrative support activities and services to the municipal administration, Technical – Administrative tests.

The project

The tunnel, entirely double-track, will be built using a mechanized shield (TBM), thus minimizing the impacts on the surface, which will remain limited to the works for which open sky excavation is inevitable, i.e. the stations, the line structures, and the short stretches of tunnel (for TBM insertion and extraction) at the end and beginning of the extension.

The areas affected by the works are subject to an important redevelopment, not limited to the areas adjacent to the station entrances but, as far as possible, also spread to the surrounding areas, with the aim of returning multifunctional public spaces and urban parks to the citizens. In this perspective, the complete restructuring of the existing AICS Olmi Sports Center is reported, which became necessary to allow the construction of the homonymous station. This will be an opportunity for the relaunch and enhancement of the Olmi Sports Center and the entire neighboring district.
