Other engineering projects
The main objective of the project is to create a volume of water retention for the Seveso torrent in order to obtain, in a transitional phase, a better degree of hydraulic safety for the areas frequently affected by the Seveso floods (Niguarda area of the Municipality of Milan); at full capacity, with the completion of the retention projects along the Seveso planned by AIPO, the hydraulic system of the Seveso torrent will reach a degree of safety such as to be able to withstand, without flooding, events with a centennial return time, guaranteeing a hydraulic clearance of 1 meter along the entire city culvert of the Seveso, Martesana and Redefossi system.
The intervention area falls within the Parco Nord of Milan and is characterized by an approximately triangular shape and is bounded to the west by the Bruzzano Cemetery, to the south by via Aldo Moro, and to the north and east by the Seveso torrent. The retention area is completely excavated and therefore no embankments are planned outside the ground level.
The technical data are as follows:
The intervention provides for compensation measures for the work mainly aimed at the redevelopment of areas in close contact with the work, with which they communicate and which will contribute to the enhancement of the Seveso torrent.
Furthermore, the acquisition of over 10 hectares of areas for environmental compensation in the municipalities of Bresso and Cormano in favor of Parco Nord Milano has been planned.
The project involves the creation of a lake fed with first groundwater completed with a perimeter maintenance path, the safeguarding of the surrounding forest which is perimetrated and integrated with new trees on the south side of the lake along Aldo Moro Street.
The lake will maintain the recreational-landscape function for about 320 days a year and will turn into a retention basin during flood events of the Seveso torrent as a controlled retention basin to safeguard the urbanized area.
